Days on hill

June 15

Drift - in Singapore

05Jun - 07Jun Drift was performed in Singapore Arts Festival, at Drama Centre. Watched the full dress rehearsal. Then attended a one day workshop by Psyche on lighting design in theatre ... she touched on quite a few things about Drift ... and made me decided to catch it on the last eveinng, 07Jun. about 5 min into the show, someone moved in and sat besides me, and it was SPY. After the show, we ended in a coffee shop opposite Bugis Junction and talked about Drift. Then about Heng Leun, his focus in work. Then about local theatre. Then about the script that I'm currently working on. Without reading through my script, just based on my explanation of the structure, SPY was able to point out a few things that had been troubling me for a long while in deciding how to rewrite it. Now there is a new direction. More work now. :)

Broadway Beng

15May Thu Drama Centre

Watched Broadway Beng 3 with Zelda, Kai Wang and SPY. I missed the first two instalments of Broadway Beng, but had heard quite a bit about it. Was great that I fnally caught it.

For a while I had been thinking of inviting some foreign friend to attend this performance, in order to expose them to the real flavour of Singapore, something similar to chilli crab or hainanese chicken rice. However, I think this is gonna be even more challenging than the food. ;-)

The hokkien, the Beng-ness, the joke ... it's a language (singlish) thing ... and it helped me revise my local-ness.

What was equally impressive, by SPY's word, the versatility of Sebastian, in delivering the 'Broadway' and the 'Beng' parts, his ease in switching between the 2 flavours quite effortlessly. So, my favourite part of the show is his Beng/Lian version of Sound Of Musics.

WHen i left the theatre, i had this strange thinking that play like this can be used as a test for new immigrants on their level of understanding of local identity. Or simply for anyone who professes to know Singapore.

I'm not sure i can pass with flying colour :P

You, The Living and Must Read After My Death

10Apr Thu

The first two movies I caught in this year's Singapore International Film Festival.

You, The Living.

Picture this. An overweight middle age man practicing drumming in his living room. Loud. Then, someone slammed the door of the sleeping room, to try shut out the sound.
Next, another middle age man went into his kitchen. Found a stick and a chair. Climbed up the chair and used it to knock on the ceiling, to try to stop the drumming man. Drum did not stop. Instead, the ceiling light fell off due to the knocking.

From a distance, another overweight middle age man watching these two neighnours from an opposite apartment block, from his balcony. Silently. Then, a woman's sound rose.

Women:"xx, what are u doing?"

Man: "i'm here"

W: What r u doing? M: I'm here.

W: Ya, but what r u doing? M: I'm here.

W: Are you thinking? M: Ya.

W: What are you thinking? M: Now that you ask, I forget.

W: Are you thinking of me? M: I don't think so.

W: You never think of me. M: ...

W: Are you coming to bed? Tomorrow is another day. M: what?

W: I said, are you coming to bed?  M: Yes.

W: What? M: I said, yes. Tomorrow is another day.

W: What? M: I said, yes. Tomorrow is another day.

Silent.

I luv Scandinavian films.

Must Read After My Death.

A woman used recording tapes to record life events.
Her husband travelled 16 weeks in a year. A husband who had distinct ideas on Sex and Love. Leaving her with four children in US and spending time waltzing with married women in Australia. Husband who reminded her in every recording to keep the bedroom neat and teach the four children right.

Four children grew up having different difflculties, struggling at the verge of insanity. At one point, the whole family seemed to destine for mental institution.
Eldest son struggled to get into a college, only to be knocked down by a car while helping another car stalled in snow. Coma for few days. Died.
Eventually, eldest daughter married and had the only grandson of the woman.

Very raw images, with long narration. Eventually, when the credits ran, we realised that the director is the grandson of the woman.

Anu on x'mas day

25Dec2007

x'mas day. we arranged to meet up with Anu ... too much gossips when one have two ex-colleagues together. :)
she works in Martha Steward's company now .. and apparently the only one who know how to use formula in Excel spreadsheet ... so she is virtually the IT expert in the company.

Jeremy and Anu finally convinced me that the x'mas tree is really big ... somehow i was comparing it with the fake x'mas tree in Takashimaya shopping centre. :P

Debbie cooked lunch. Yummy. :)

I invited her to join me and 2 friends from SIngapore (Zhiwei and Pashan) for dim sun breakfast on the next day. She was happy. I was happy.

Jeremy took a day off from work ... and we went walking in NY.

Starting from the park near the river.
Then we reached Columbia University campus.
Went to Harlem. Many street stalls. J showed me a KFC in the area ... the bullet proof glass panel at the ordering counter which will be put in use in night time. I saw a black Santa Claus outside a shop promoting sales. I took a picture of him. Then he insisted I should take one with him. A lady customer helped took the picture. Then he said Merry x'mas. We smiled. Parted.
We went to Washington Square. NYU is there. Greenwich village. Found a nice cafe. walked in. Cafe Reggio. Nice Cappuccino.
We took a train to South Ferry to take the ferry to Staten Island (and back) ... in the sunset when passing Statue of Liberty. When we were back, there was a huge orangish Sun hanging lowly on Manhattan's sky line ... so huge and orangish that we were not sure if it was actually the sun.

J went to meet up with a lady who had attended a Chinese language course in Taiwan University - which J was thinking of joining.
I decided to explore Herald Square area.
By the time I came out from Virgin record store after 1 hour at 8pm, all shops were closed due to x'mas eve. All except Macdonald, Starbucks and a restaurant called 'CoffeeShop. Hmmmm ... CoffeeShop for me. Surprisingly it was serving some nice Brazilian food, with excellent music and atmosphere. Could not tell standing outside the restaurant. Highly recommended.

Took a train to Rockefeller centre to see the famous x'mas tree and skating ring. Tonnes of people. I saw. I was there. I left while the crowd was stilll streaming into the area for the countdown. I  walked to TimeSquare and then took a train home. Totally soaked by the x'mas mood in New York.

Philadelphia

23Dec

We woke up and had the remaining pad thai from last nite's supper (at Buddakan) for breakfast. We walked around the neighbourhood of David's house, to the park, across the bridge, and back. Wanted to check if David was up for some brunch, then realised he was not home from his party last night. He was still in New Jersey but we made plan to meet up for dinner.

We went on to check out the Independence Square - for some USA independent stories. Stopped at a very cosy cafe for some resting. Then over to Philadephia museum  of Arts. We had to park the car quite a distance away, along the river. It began to rain. We walked in the rain ... not too heavy. It was a very beautiful walk along the river, in the rain and finally reaching the grand entrance of the museum.

When we left at 5pm, the rain started again ... a little heavier. When we got into the car and drove past the City Hall, I commented that it is the most beautiful building in Philadelphia ... it reminded me of Gotham City in Batman movies.

We went to try Cheese Steak before meeting David for dinner. It was THE thing to try in Philadelphia.

When we went back to David's place and chatted for another hour. That's when we found out that Barry Gibbs of BeeGees had indicated that he would be interested to write a song for David's latest album entitled Addiction - dedicated to people with all kinds of addictions. David had been working on this album for past 6-7 years ... withb his own money and outside of his day job as an IT professional. I thought this was a really great thing. David's group is called Flynsolo ... and the album will be distributed via iTune ... targeting early 2008.

We went on for dinner at a restaurant called Continental ... which had a roof top section for cocktail drinks and food. There was a cokcktail named after Buzz Aldrin, who was one of the three crews on Apollo 11 that landed on moon. The cocktail was great. The food was great. The conversations were great. A perfect endnote to our weekend trip to Philadelphia.

We parted with David at 10.30pm and left for NYC.
